Canadian Study Permit Key Policies

Important policies that every international student must understand before applying to Laurentian University.

1

PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) Required

Starting 2024, most international students need a PAL before applying for a study permit. Laurentian issues PAL to accepted students — one more reason to secure your offer early.

2

Changing Institutions (DLI) → New Permit Required

Transferring to a different DLI requires a new study permit. You cannot begin classes before the new permit is approved.

3

PAL Quota is Sufficient at Laurentian

Laurentian University has an adequate PAL quota for all applicants who have paid their tuition deposit or who are re-applying for a new study permit.

4

Proof of Funds: CAD $22,896 (from Sep 1, 2025)

Starting September 1, 2025, the minimum cost-of-living funds required increases to CAD $22,896 per person — not including tuition or travel expenses.

Permanent Residency Through Sudbury

Sudbury is an RCIP & FCIP community — a dedicated permanent residency pathway for skilled workers. Studying at Laurentian is an investment in your Canadian PR journey.

What is RCIP & FCIP?

The Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) and Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP) offer Permanent Residency to skilled workers who wish to settle in rural and semi-rural Canadian communities.

Greater Sudbury was selected due to its demand for skilled workers and its commitment to supporting newcomers — including international students from Laurentian.

6-Step RCIP/FCIP Process:

1

Check Federal Eligibility

Confirm you meet the RCIP or FCIP requirements from the Canadian government.

2

Job Offer from Designated Employer

Secure a full-time job offer from an IRCC-approved employer.

3

Confirm Job Meets Federal Requirements

Position must fall within the priority industries & occupations list.

4

Prepare Documentation

Employer submits a recommendation on your behalf to the RCIP/FCIP program.

5

Apply for PR

Use the recommendation form to submit your permanent residence application.
