Study in Australia's Northern Territory Scholarship

Study in Australia’s Northern Territory Scholarships are provided by the Northern Territory Government to talented international students to study in Australia’s Northern Territory.

The scholarship program is accessible for all international students wanting to study in the Northern Territory (NT).

Who can apply

You must:

  • have applied and obtained an offer of admission to study in the NT. AUFIN can help you
  • have a demonstrated record of academic excellence, community engagement and leadership
  • be accepted to study with one of the NT’s education or training providers listed under “Participating providers” (below)
  • meet the NT education or training provider's academic and English entry criteria
  • be residing interstate or overseas and planning to move to the NT at the time of submitting your application
  • not already be living in the NT or studying with an NT education provider
  • not hold any other scholarship (except Charles Darwin University Global Merit Scholarship)
  • have submitted your completed scholarship application form to Study NT, and
  • not be a current Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen

What you can get

The scholarship amount is for your first semester or year of tuition fees with your education and training provider.

When you can apply

Applications are currently closed. 

Study NT is undertaking a review of its grant programs. This review is to ensure the grants best support students in today’s changing international education and training environment. While this review is underway all Study NT grant programs are suspended. Students are encouraged to stay connected with Study NT for future updates.

Scholarship applications sent to Study NT during the grant review will not be accepted.

How to apply

  • Study NT is undertaking a review of its grant programs.
  • This review is to ensure future grants are aligned with the changing needs of the international education and training sector and that they continue to deliver meaningful outcomes for the Northern Territory.
  • While this review is underway, all Study NT Grant Programs are suspended. This includes Student Wellbeing Grants, Travel and Accommodation Grants as well as the Scholarship Program.
  • Students are encouraged to stay connected with Study NT for future updates.

How your application is assessed

Study NT will accept and assess your application in consultation with the participating education or training provider that you have received an offer of admission from.

If your application is successful

If your application is successful, Study NT will notify you.

You must sign a letter of agreement confirming you will continue to meet the scholarship criteria and terms. This is a legally binding agreement.

You need to return the signed agreement to Study NT within 2 weeks of receiving your Scholarship Endorsement Letter.

How your scholarship is paid

Your scholarship will be paid directly to your education or training provider, who will reduce your fees for your first semester or year of tuition to the equivalency of your awarded scholarship.

Travel Grant

The Study NT International Student Travel Grant will assist international students relocating to the Northern Territory from overseas. 

Grants of up to AUD $750 are available to cover relocation costs (flights) for eligible international students. 

Study NT International Student Travel Grant guidelines

Who can apply

Applicants must: 

  • Be outside of Australia at time of application (evidence will be required).
  • Not be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident.
  • Not have previously received funding under the International Student Travel Grant program. 
  • Be planning to move to the Northern Territory from outside of Australia. 
  • Have been granted a valid student visa (subclass 500). 
  • Arrive in the Northern Territory before 1 June 2025 and provide evidence of intended travel (flight itinerary) with their application. 
  • Not have received any other Study NT grant funding (i.e. Study NT Accommodation Grant/Study in Australia's Northern Territory Scholarship Program) 
  • Be a current international student enrolled for the next period of study with a Northern Territory international education and training provider. Proof of Certificate of Enrolment is required. 
  • Not be an international student enrolled in short courses or non-accredited courses. Courses must be a minimum duration of 24 weeks to be eligible for application under this grant. 
  • Be enrolled in a course that commences prior to 1 June 2025. 
  • Open or have an Australian bank account in the applicant's name and have an Australian address for receipt of funding (payment will be made to the applicant following arrival in the Northern Territory, and upon verification of bank account details and address by Study NT). 
  • Note only one application is permitted per applicant. 
  • Note grant funding is not transferrable. 

What you can get

Up to AUD $750 for eligible international students to reimbursement relocation expenses (flight costs).

Study NT International Student Accommodation Grant

Study NT has established the International Student Accommodation Grant to assist international students, who are moving to Darwin, Northern Territory (NT).

The grant will cover 6 weeks of the student’s accommodation fee at CDU Village Casuarina Campus, located on-campus at Charles Darwin University (CDU) or UniLodge Darwin.

Study NT International Student Accommodation Grant guidelines

Who can apply

  • The applicant must not already live in the NT when applying for this grant.
  • The applicant must be planning to move to the NT from interstate or overseas.
  • The applicant must not hold current Australian citizenship or Australian permanent residency.
  • The applicant must have been granted a valid student visa (subclass 500).
  • The applicant must have applied and obtained an offer of admission to study in the NT. Study NT requires evidence of acceptance to transfer to or commence study at the applicant’s chosen NT education and training provider (confirmation of enrolment document from the student’s institution).
  • International students enrolled in short courses or non-accredited courses are not eligible to apply. The course must be at least a duration of 24 weeks to be eligible to apply for this grant.
  • The student’s course must commence prior to 1 June 2025 and the 6-week accommodation must commence by this date.
  • The accommodation grant is available for one person only, couples and dependents are not eligible to stay at the accommodation provider.

What you can get

The grant will cover 6 weeks of the student’s accommodation fee at CDU Village Casuarina Campus, located on-campus at CDU or UniLodge Darwin.

The application process consists of 2 steps.

Step 2. Once the application is approved by Study NT, the applicant must apply online with the accommodation provider. Study NT will provide further information via email once the application is approved.

  • Applicants must currently reside outside the NT.
  • Applicants are not guaranteed being awarded the Study NT International Student Accommodation Grant.
  • Accommodation is subject to availability. Room availability cannot be guaranteed. Successful applicants will receive 6 weeks accommodation at UniLodge (maximum $277 per week) or CDU Village Casuarina Campus (maximum $210 per week).
  • Accommodation costs are subject to change from the accommodation provider.
  • Accommodation at UniLodge is subject to the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS)* and all applicants need to undertake a yearly income check.
  • Accommodation at CDU Village Casuarina Campus is available to prospective CDU students only. An entry interview applies.
  • Successful applicants at either accommodation provider must commit to a minimum 6-month contract and adhere to the conditions of that provider’s contract, including lease break arrangements. Applicants must notify the accommodation provider 2 weeks prior to planning on moving out of the property.
  • Successful applicants must agree to the accommodation provider’s terms and conditions.
  • A refundable security bond (4 weeks rent), a residential life program fee ($100 per year) and a departure cleaning fee of $185 applies for UniLodge Darwin.
  • A refundable rental bond (4 weeks rent), an annual cleaning fee ($40) and an application fee of $55 applies at CDU Village Casuarina Campus.
  • Applications must be submitted at least 15 business days prior to the commencement of study or relocation to Darwin.
  • Funding is limited and awarded at Study NT’s discretion.
  • Applications close at 3pm (ACST) on 1 June 2025 unless fully subscribed earlier. 

*The NRAS threshold depends on the apartment type. Below is an example for the 2024-25 NRAS year:
